Terra Industries secures $52 million seed round to expand African defence tech footprint
The company plans to deploy autonomous systems and open offices in London, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. as it seeks to consolidate fragmented defence supply chains.

Terra Industries, an African defence technology firm established in 2024, has closed a $52 million seed funding round. The capital injection includes an additional $18 million, bringing the total to $52 million following earlier back-to-back rounds of $11.75 million and $22 million earlier this year. The latest round was backed by investors including Joe Lonsdale’s 8VC, Silent Ventures, and Nova Global.
The company intends to utilise the fresh capital to expand manufacturing operations across the Global South and accelerate the deployment of autonomous systems, including drones and mine-detecting combat vehicles. Terra Industries also plans to open new offices in London and San Francisco, while establishing a presence in Washington D.C. to access capital and forge partnerships with U.S. entities.
Terra Industries identifies its primary competition as any defence firm that has secured government contracts, specifically naming suppliers from Turkey, China, and Western nations. The firm aims to consolidate the ecosystem by becoming the largest provider of military and critical defence infrastructure for countries in the Global South, addressing what it describes as fragmented and potentially destabilised defence supply chains that currently rely on numerous international contractors.
According to the company, it is on track to secure $100 million in contracts, including at least one federal contract, and generate revenue in the tens of millions of dollars by the end of the year. This financial target comes as the firm seeks to address security challenges in Africa, where many nations currently depend on the West, Russia, or China for security intelligence.
The investment highlights Terra Industries’ growing prominence in the African defence technology sector. 8VC, a key investor in this round, also backs U.S. defence firm Anduril, which is reportedly in talks to raise funding at a $100 billion valuation, as well as Shield AI, linking Terra’s expansion to broader trends in U.S. defence technology.
