TechCrunch and Stripe to identify Australia’s next breakout startups in Sydney
The Sydney event on 19 August features a judging panel of industry veterans, with the grand prize winner earning $15,000 in Stripe credits and automatic entry to TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 in San Francisco.

TechCrunch, in partnership with Stripe, is set to host the Startup Battlefield competition in Sydney on 19 August 2026. The event will bring together eight early-stage Australian startups to pitch live to investors, press, and the broader tech community. The competition aims to identify the country’s most promising ventures, offering significant prizes and access to global networks for the top performers.
The judging panel comprises Jasmine Liew, Brendan Hill, and Jarron Aizen, each bringing distinct perspectives to the evaluation process. Liew provides institutional knowledge regarding global scaling and the payment infrastructure that underpins modern commerce. Hill, a venture partner and active angel investor, approaches the pitches with an investor’s lens, assessing whether he would bet his own capital on the teams. Aizen, a founder with experience building companies in the Australian market, offers insight grounded in the practical realities of local entrepreneurship.
Isabelle Johannessen, director of Startup Battlefield, will host and MC the event. The competition serves as a launchpad for founders, providing finalists with access to a room of operators, investors, and press. While the cash prizes are substantial, the primary value lies in the exposure and connections afforded to the participating teams.
The grand prize winner will receive $15,000 in Stripe fee credits and an automatic ticket to TechCrunch Disrupt 2026, scheduled to take place in San Francisco from 13 to 15 October 2026. Second place will receive $5,000 in Stripe credits, while third place will be awarded $2,000 in credits. These prizes are designed to fuel growth and provide a direct pathway to the global stage.
Startup Battlefield has a proven track record of identifying high-potential companies, having launched over 1,700 firms globally. Alumni include major technology companies such as Dropbox, Cloudflare, Discord, and Trello, with founders collectively raising $32 billion and producing more than 250 exits. The previous Sydney winner, HealthMatch, is now valued at over $25 million and serves a million patients globally, illustrating the competition’s potential to accelerate successful ventures.
