Teacher killed in stabbing at Slovak school; 13-year-old arrested
Police are investigating the attack in Staskov as premeditated murder. No motive had been established at the time of reporting.
A 61-year-old teacher was killed and two people were seriously injured in a stabbing at an elementary school in Staskov, northwestern Slovakia, on Tuesday. Authorities said a 13-year-old pupil had been arrested.
A 44-year-old teacher and a schoolgirl were also wounded. Health Minister Kamil Sasko said the girl was in critical condition, while Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok said the second teacher’s life was not in danger.
Police are investigating the case as premeditated murder through the Office for Combating Organised Crime. Authorities said no motive was immediately known and that the situation in the village was under control. The arrest does not establish guilt.
Sutaj Estok said the school’s head teacher followed established procedures and helped prevent further harm. Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed condolences and said he was following the incident with concern.
President Peter Pellegrini called for citizens to calm the public atmosphere. His comments about aggression and intolerance were his assessment; authorities had not identified a motive for the attack.
