Tate brothers to remain in Miami jail during UK extradition appeal
US Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis cited the brothers’ wealth and international travel in refusing their request for release.
Andrew and Tristan Tate must remain in a Miami jail while they appeal extradition to the United Kingdom, after a US magistrate judge ruled they posed a significant flight risk.
Judge Lauren Louis described the brothers as a “quintessential flight risk”, citing their wealth and frequent international travel. She said the court record indicated they had an exceptional capacity to leave the jurisdiction, even if their online displays of wealth overstated their actual holdings.
The brothers were arrested in Miami on 18 July after the UK requested their extradition. They face charges including rape, assault and facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, which they deny.
Their lawyers had argued that the brothers’ public profile made flight unlikely and described their social media displays of wealth as “theatrical” and “grandiose”. Their legal team also said continued detention complicated separate proceedings in Romania.
The brothers are also defending proceedings in Romania, including allegations involving trafficking minors. A lawyer said they would continue to contest the allegations and engage with legal processes in each jurisdiction, according to Al Jazeera.
The timing and outcome of the extradition appeal have not been reported.
