Sullivan opens US national team career with Peru win
The 17-year-old played 62 minutes in a 4–1 friendly victory, becoming the second-youngest starter in the United States’ 113-year team history.
Cavan Sullivan made his United States men’s national team debut by starting in a 4–1 friendly win over Peru in Orlando. He played 62 minutes in a match that began a new World Cup cycle.
Sullivan had turned 17 on the Monday before the match. Fox Sports reported he became the second-youngest starter in the programme’s 113-year history, and the fourth 16-year-old to represent the United States.
The opportunity followed a strong run at Philadelphia Union: Fox Sports reported Sullivan had seven goals and nine assists across his previous nine games. The match account said he appeared comfortable alongside seven World Cup veterans in the starting side.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino may select Sullivan for the next match against Chile in St Louis. His place in that lineup is not confirmed.
United States veteran Tyler Adams praised Sullivan’s maturity in training and matches, saying he was “not out of his depth”. Adams said the teenager had time to develop further.
