Stubbs shines on Hants debut despite 'not much sleep'
South African international scores 69 on T20 Blast debut after arriving from IPL with minimal rest

South African cricketer Tristan Stubbs delivered a standout performance on his Hampshire T20 Blast debut, scoring 69 runs off 42 balls to guide the Hawks to a 30-run victory over Essex at the Utilita Bowl on Tuesday night. The win marks Hampshire’s first success of the season, achieved under challenging logistical circumstances that saw Stubbs arrive in the country less than 24 hours prior to the match.

Stubbs flew directly from Indian Premier League commitments, landing at 8:00 PM the previous night and reaching his accommodation just after 10:00 PM. Despite the tight turnaround, he was present for medical testing by 7:30 AM on the day of the fixture. Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, Stubbs acknowledged the physical toll, noting he had "not much sleep" and was unable to complete his usual pre-match routines.

The innings was defined by a strategic partnership with fellow overseas signing Hilton Cartwright in the final overs. The pair helped Hampshire reach a competitive total of 201, with Cartwright finishing on 46 not out from 21 balls. Stubbs, who struck five sixes and three fours, described the approach as one focused on maintaining momentum, admitting he initially struggled to clear the boundary before finding his rhythm.

Although this was Stubbs’ first appearance in the T20 Blast since signing with Hampshire in February, he brings established experience to the English domestic circuit. He previously featured for Southern Brave in The Hundred last summer and is scheduled to play for the same side again this year. His ability to adapt quickly to the format was evident in his structured approach to the innings, despite the fatigue from travel.

Hampshire will look to build on this momentum when they host Surrey at the Utilita Bowl on Friday. The victory provides a significant boost to the team’s standing in the competition, with Stubbs expressing satisfaction at his contribution despite the abbreviated preparation time.
