Stokes warns mishandling IPL conflicts could drive players from England
Ben Stokes argues that the modern cricketing landscape requires adaptation, cautioning that rigid expectations regarding player availability risk losing talent to international cricket altogether.

England captain Ben Stokes has publicly defended fast bowler Jofra Archer following criticism regarding the player’s absence from the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s. Archer missed the opening match due to his recent commitments with the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), a decision that has drawn scrutiny from former players and pundits who argue that his central contract with the national team should take precedence.
Stokes acknowledged the frustration felt by some fans and former cricketers but argued that the expectations placed on modern athletes must evolve alongside the sport. He noted that the cricketing landscape has shifted significantly over the past two decades, offering players opportunities in global franchise leagues that were previously unavailable. According to Stokes, teams must adapt to this reality rather than expecting constant availability from their squad members.
“There’s opportunities for cricketers now that there wasn’t 10, 15, 20 years ago,” Stokes said. “Yes, in an ideal situation, it would be unbelievably great to have everyone who you want available every single opportunity. But it’s not the way of cricket at the moment. There’s so much more out there for players.”
The England skipper highlighted the potential long-term consequences of poor management regarding these scheduling conflicts. He warned that mishandling such situations could result in talented players choosing not to play for England in the future, a scenario he described as detrimental to the national team. Stokes emphasised that while the current arrangement is complex, the alternative of losing key players entirely would be worse for everyone involved.
Despite the controversy, Stokes affirmed Archer’s dedication to the national side. He stated that the fast bowler has demonstrated his commitment and love for playing for England, noting that his unavailability for the first Test does not alter that standing. The Rajasthan Royals reached the IPL playoffs before being eliminated, after which Archer completed his contractual obligations.
Archer is currently taking a short break and will undergo assessment ahead of the second Test later this month. It remains uncertain whether he will be fit and available for the remainder of the series, with questions still being raised by critics about his readiness to return to international duty.
