Jack Diamond stars as County ease to 3-1 win at home of Argyle

Stockport County began their Sky Bet League One season with a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle, establishing early control in the opening round of the fixture. The result marks a strong start for County, who capitalised on a series of clinical moments to secure all three points away from home.

Jack Diamond was the architect of the victory, earning player of the match honours for his direct involvement in all three goals. The midfielder opened the scoring in the 14th minute, cutting through the Argyle defence before unleashing a shot that took a late deflection off Matty Sorinola to bypass goalkeeper Murphy Cooper.

Diamond’s influence continued in the 26th minute when he provided the assist for Harry Wood’s second goal. After Diamond crossed from the right, forcing a save from Cooper, striker Kyle Wootton was perfectly positioned to tap in the rebound and extend Stockport’s lead.

The third goal arrived shortly after the interval in the 49th minute, with Diamond once again setting up the play. Ryan Glover finished the move after beating defender Alex Hartridge, firing home from just inside the box to put County firmly in command.

Plymouth Argyle managed to pull one back in the 79th minute through a late consolation goal from substitute Xavier Amaechi. The strike came from the edge of the box after County failed to clear a corner, but it was insufficient to change the outcome of the contest.
