St Helens have maintained their pursuit of a Super League play-off position with a 46-16 victory over Wakefield Trinity, overturning a half-time deficit to secure a crucial win. The result leaves the club four points behind sixth-placed Leigh Leopards with four matches remaining in the regular season.
Entering the fixture on a run of three straight defeats and five losses in six games, St Helens trailed 16-12 at the break. They had slipped to a 10-0 start against the fourth-placed hosts, who took an early lead through Tyson Smoothy and Isaiah Vagana. However, the visitors produced a decisive second-half performance, scoring 34 unanswered points and crossing the line six times after the interval.
Tristan Sailor was instrumental in the turnaround, completing a hat-trick that included two second-half scores. Lewis Murphy also contributed twice, while Jake Davies added two tries in the closing stages. The surge in momentum came as Wakefield’s dominance waned, with Lachlan Walmsley having two potential tries disallowed for the hosts in the second period.
Wakefield’s campaign was further hampered by early injuries to key personnel. Josh Rourke and try-scorer Isaiah Vagana were forced off within the first 15 minutes, with Vagana departing after a collision and Rourke leaving following a clash with Murphy. The losses disrupted the home side’s structure, preventing them from capitalising on their half-time lead.
The defeat marks Wakefield’s sixth successive loss against St Helens and costs them the opportunity to close the gap on table-toppers Leeds. For St Helens, who have never previously failed to reach the post-season, the victory provides a platform to fight for a top-six finish, though they remain reliant on results elsewhere in the table.
