Football clubs issue statements following the death of the Nigerian left-winger

Southampton FC and Royal Antwerp have announced the death of former academy player Victor Udoh at the age of 21. The Nigerian left-winger spent six months in Southampton’s academy from February 2025, making eight appearances for their under-21 side in Premier League 2.

Prior to his move to the south coast of England, Udoh played for Royal Antwerp’s academy and first team. He joined the Belgian club’s academy in 2023 and made 28 first-team appearances, scoring 12 goals for the 'Young Reds'. He also played 27 times for Antwerp’s development side in the same season before making his first-team debut.

After leaving Southampton in September, Udoh joined Czech second-tier side Ceske Budejovice. Both clubs have expressed devastation at the news and offered condolences to his family and loved ones.

Southampton posted on X: "We are devastated by the tragic passing of former player Victor Udoh at the age of 21. The thoughts of everyone at the club go out to Victor's loved ones at this extremely difficult time."

Royal Antwerp issued a similar statement, noting: "With great dismay, RAFC has learned of the passing of former player Victor Udoh. Our thoughts are with Victor's family, friends, and loved ones. We wish them much strength, support, and warmth during this particularly difficult time."

The specific cause of death has not been disclosed in available reports.
