Sooryavanshi faces five-day test in Duleep Trophy final
The 15-year-old has been named East Zone vice-captain for its final against South Zone in Chennai.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is set to play his first five-day first-class match when East Zone face South Zone in the Duleep Trophy final at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.
The 15-year-old has been named vice-captain under Ishan Kishan and is expected to bat near the top of East Zone’s order. His previous first-class matches, including fixtures for Bihar, India Under-19 and East Zone, were played over four days.
Sooryavanshi enters the final after making 92 from 81 balls and 40 in the chase against Central Zone in the semifinal. East Zone won by four wickets to reach their first Duleep Trophy final since 2012–13.
Yahoo Sports reported that the semifinal 92 made Sooryavanshi, aged 15 years and 157 days, the youngest player to score a Duleep Trophy half-century. His reported first-class record stands at 347 runs from 10 matches, including two half-centuries.
The final will add a longer-format challenge to a young career that has included T20, List A and first-class cricket. The match is scheduled for Sunday, with its outcome yet to be decided.
