Sony clarifies Thalgau disc production will fall 10 per cent in 2028
Sony still plans to stop producing new PlayStation game discs after January 2028, while allowing reorders of existing titles.
Sony’s last reported discmaking plant is expected to reduce overall production by 10 per cent in 2028, correcting earlier reports that output would fall by 90 per cent.
A Sony DADC spokesperson told journalist Brian Crecente, as reported by The Verge, that the anticipated decline referred to total product volume. It did not mean the Thalgau plant would operate at just 10 per cent of current production.
Sony still plans to stop producing new video game discs after January 2028. However, publishers will be able to place reorders for existing PlayStation disc games, meaning the policy will not immediately end all PlayStation disc production.
Earlier reporting by ORF Austria suggested the Thalgau plant could be restructured, with about 300 employees retrained to make microlenses. Sony has not confirmed whether that plan is still proceeding.
The timing and scale of any broader transition away from discs remain unclear. Sony DADC did not provide The Verge with further details on the production changes or the reported workforce restructuring.
