Sonos enables iOS Live Activities for iPhone lockscreen controls
The latest Sonos app update brings requested playback controls to the iPhone lockscreen, though album art and Apple Watch controls remain unavailable.

Sonos has released an update to its iOS application that introduces support for Apple’s Live Activities, allowing iPhone users to access basic playback controls and audio information directly from the lockscreen. The functionality, which mirrors features already available in the Android version of the app, enables users to manage music or podcast playback without unlocking their device or opening the application.
The feature was teased by Sonos CEO Tom Conrad during a Bloomberg interview in February 2026. In a statement posted to Reddit and confirmed by 9to5Mac, the company described the addition as a “much requested, anticipated, and needed feature.” The update displays the name of the group or room where audio was last playing from, alongside the title of the content currently in play.
Despite the positive reception of the functionality, support for Live Activities is disabled by default. This decision follows significant user backlash regarding a major Sonos app update in 2024. Users must manually enable the feature by navigating to the Sonos app preferences or the Sonos section within iOS settings. Once activated, the Live Activity appears after playback is initiated and the app is closed.
The integration extends to Apple Watch and CarPlay displays, where the Live Activity will be visible. However, playback controls are not yet supported on these devices. It remains unclear if or when controls will be added for the watch or car interface, though Sonos indicated its team is continuing to work on improving the feature.
Additional limitations include the absence of album art support. Sonos stated it is exploring “alternative ways to enhance the lock screen experience” regarding visual elements. The Live Activity is programmed to automatically disappear from the lockscreen 15 minutes after playback stops.
