Software developer reveals hardware manufacturing challenges were overstated for Jamcorder MIDI recorder
The creator of the Jamcorder argues that software complexity, not supply chain or production, defined the project’s difficulty, offering a counter-narrative to traditional hardware entrepreneurship fears.
Software developer Chip Weinberger has published a detailed reflection on the launch of the Jamcorder, a fully automated MIDI recorder designed to capture piano playing without human intervention. Having sold 2,500 units, Weinberger states the business is now self-sustaining, marking the completion of two personal goals: creating his ideal recording device and transitioning from software to hardware manufacturing.
Contrary to the industry adage that hardware is inherently difficult, Weinberger argues that the physical production of the Jamcorder was less challenging than anticipated. He attributes the primary difficulty to software development, which required approximately 200,000 lines of code across the firmware, an accompanying app, and manufacturing tooling. The development process spanned over three years, taking place in what he describes as a "pre-LLM world."
Weinberger noted that while he anticipated common hardware pitfalls such as scrapped production runs or component shortages, these did not materialise. He did, however, mention that "Trump’s tariffs were a close call," though no specific details regarding potential costs or mitigation strategies were provided. The device itself features a simple design, utilising a single printed circuit board, single-screw assembly, and an injection mold with generous draft and no slides.
To maintain simplicity, Weinberger made several design compromises, including the exclusion of low battery detection, ambient light detection, a power button, and USB-C connectivity. He acknowledges that the Jamcorder is a niche product for musicians and that its success is specific to its simplicity and scale, contrasting it with more complex industries such as smartwatches or automotive manufacturing where margins are typically lower.
In his analysis, Weinberger advises aspiring hardware entrepreneurs that "hardware is as hard as you make it." He suggests that while the project was manageable at medium scale, significantly higher complexity or volume would present different challenges. His core recommendation is that entrepreneurs should not be deterred by the industry's reputation for difficulty, provided they maintain strict margin protection.
