Drone strikes train near Ukraine-Poland border after officials depart
A strike at Yahodyn station damaged a train engine after a diplomatic service carrying Boris Johnson and senior European officials left earlier than scheduled.
A drone struck the engine of a train at Yahodyn station in western Ukraine, about 2km from the Polish border, shortly after former UK prime minister Boris Johnson and senior European security officials had travelled through.
No casualties were reported and passengers were evacuated. Ukraine’s state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, said a jet-propelled drone was detected and an evacuation order was issued 15 minutes before the impact.
The railway authority said the train carrying Johnson and the officials had departed Yahodyn earlier than scheduled. Former CIA chief David Petraeus was reportedly on another train at the station when the strike occurred.
Ukrzaliznytsia said the diplomatic train may have been the intended target, but there is no independent confirmation of that claim. The officials were not on the train that was hit.
Russia said it had struck railway infrastructure in western Ukraine, without specifically confirming the train or location described in the report. The attack adds to a pattern of strikes on Ukraine’s railways, depots and other transport facilities, which remain central to civilian movement while air travel is suspended.
