Smithsburg boys secure 1A West regional title in push for state sweep
The Smithsburg boys team won the MPSSAA Class 1A West championship on Friday, while dozens of Washington County athletes achieved top-three finishes across regional meets.

The Smithsburg boys track and field team claimed the MPSSAA Class 1A West region championship on its home track on Friday, May 15. The victory positions the programme to potentially complete a year-long sweep of 1A state titles, following previous successes in cross country and indoor track and field.
Washington County’s seven public-school track and field teams competed across four region championship meets during the week. As of Friday evening, the 3A West region meet was the only one remaining, with its second day scheduled for Saturday, May 16, in Frederick.
The Smithsburg boys’ win contributes to a broader pattern of regional success for the county. The team had previously captured the 1A cross country crown in November and the indoor track and field title in February, establishing a strong trajectory toward the state championships.
Dozens of Washington County athletes secured top-three finishes across the various region meets, highlighting the depth of local talent. Notable individual performances included Daniel Apiou of Clear Spring, who finished first in the 1A West boys 110 hurdles, high jump, and triple jump. Chloe Gietka of South Hagerstown won the 4A North girls triple jump, while Dylan Herbst of Smithsburg placed first in the 1A West boys 800 and 1,600 metres.
Skyla Mastronardi of Smithsburg won the 1A West girls high jump, and several other athletes tied for second or finished third in their respective events. These results underscore the competitive nature of the MPSSAA regional championships as the county’s athletes prepare for the final stages of the season.
