LeBron James has officially joined the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2026-27 NBA season, a move that has reshaped the league’s competitive landscape and triggered significant activity in prediction markets. According to data from Kalshi, the New York Knicks are the clear favourites to be James’ first opponent, with a 55 per cent probability assigned to the matchup. The potential opening-night clash at Madison Square Garden coincides with a banner ceremony for the Knicks’ 2026 championship, marking the end of a 53-year drought for the franchise.
The decision to join Philadelphia was heavily influenced by the team’s acquisition of Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics. Brown was traded following Philadelphia’s playoff victory over Boston in 2026, a result that effectively ended Brown’s tenure in New England. James’ agent, Rich Paul, indicated that the former New York Knicks would have been the destination had the team not secured the title, suggesting the championship outcome directly altered James’ trajectory.
Philadelphia’s roster now features four players who have averaged at least 25.0 points in a season multiple times: James, Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey. If all four start the season opener, it would represent the first time in NBA history that a team has fielded such a high-scoring quartet in a debut game. No team has previously started four different players who each averaged at least 20 points in a season.

The bookmakers also assign a 60 per cent chance to Philadelphia achieving at least 50 wins, with 31 per cent for 55 wins and 10 per cent for 60 wins. James, who will be 41 at the start of the season, joins the roster with the aim of becoming the first player to win a title with four different teams.
