Shelton reaches first US Open final to set up Zverev showdown

Ben Shelton has reached his first Grand Slam final after defeating fellow American Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 in the US Open semi-final.

The eighth seed recovered from losing the opening set to secure an all-American victory and will meet top seed Alexander Zverev at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday.

Zverev reached the final with a 6-3, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (8-6) win over Karen Khachanov. The 2026 French Open champion has won four consecutive matches at the US Open without dropping a set, according to Sky Sports.

Shelton finished his semi-final with 47 winners, including 20 aces. His appearance is also the first by a Black American man in the US Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972, a milestone reported by Sky Sports.

The final gives Shelton a chance to end the 23-year wait for an American men’s singles Grand Slam champion. Andy Roddick was the last American man to win one, at the 2003 US Open.

Zverev will contest his second US Open final and, as reported by Sky Sports, his third consecutive Grand Slam final.
