Shelton ends Alcaraz’s US Open title defence in five-set quarter-final
American eighth seed Ben Shelton defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (10-6) to reach the semi-finals.
Ben Shelton has advanced to the US Open semi-finals after defeating defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set quarter-final.
The American eighth seed recovered from losing the opening set to take the next two, before Alcaraz won the fourth and forced a deciding set.
Shelton held his nerve in the final-set tie-break, winning 10-6 after a match that lasted four hours and 28 minutes, according to Al Jazeera Global News.
The result ended Alcaraz’s title defence and his bid for a third consecutive championship in New York. Both players are 23.
Shelton, the highest-seeded American men’s singles player at this year’s final Grand Slam, benefited from strong home support during the deciding stages.
