Shelton and Tiafoe set up all-American US Open semifinal
The winner will reach the men’s final, giving an American a chance to end a singles major drought dating to Andy Roddick’s 2003 title.
Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe will meet in Friday’s US Open men’s semifinal after both Americans survived five-set quarterfinals, guaranteeing the United States a finalist in the men’s singles draw.
Shelton defeated Carlos Alcaraz in a fifth-set tiebreak after a four-hour, 28-minute quarterfinal. Tiafoe recovered from two sets down and a 3-0 deficit in the deciding set to beat fellow American Alex Michelsen.
The match will be the first all-American US Open men’s semifinal since the current title drought began. No American man has won a major singles title since Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open victory, while Taylor Fritz’s 2024 appearance was the most recent American men’s grand slam final cited by CBS Sports.
Tiafoe is set to return to the top 10 when the rankings update and has reached three US Open semifinals this century. He also leads his most recent US Open meeting with Shelton, having beaten him in five sets in 2024.
Alexander Zverev will face Karen Khachanov in the other men’s semifinal. The winner of the American matchup will advance to Sunday’s final.
