Cardinals open NFL season with 26–14 win over Chargers
Arizona led throughout an away victory built on contributions from offence, defence and special teams.
The Arizona Cardinals began NFL Week 1 with a 26–14 away win over the Los Angeles Chargers, leading from the opening drive and moving to 1–0.
According to Yahoo Sports, quarterback Jacoby Brissett completed 27 of 37 passes for 277 yards and a touchdown. Trey McBride led Arizona’s receiving effort with nine catches for 95 yards and a touchdown, while Kendrick Bourne made eight receptions for 75 yards.
Arizona ran for 116 yards, with Tyler Allgeier and Jeremiyah Love accounting for 102 between them. Allgeier finished with 61 yards from 17 carries, while Love added 41 yards from 11 attempts and a touchdown.
The Cardinals’ defence held Los Angeles to 268 total yards. It recorded three sacks, two takeaways and five tackles for loss, while also stopping the Chargers on fourth down in a goal-to-go situation.
Special teams provided another decisive contribution when Simi Fehoko blocked a punt. Kicker Chad Ryland made three field goals and two extra points, although he missed one field-goal attempt.
Arizona entered the game as the week’s biggest underdogs, according to the supplied Yahoo Sports account. The result marked a win across all three phases and gave the Cardinals an early lead in the season standings.
