Seven free streaming options for smart TV viewers
Engadget’s guide highlights ad-supported platforms, library services and free catalogues available across major smart TV systems.

Viewers looking to reduce streaming costs have seven free-to-access options to consider, according to a guide published by Engadget. The list covers Tubi, Pluto TV, Hoopla, Kanopy, YouTube, Prime Video’s free section and Sling Freestream.
Most of the services combine on-demand films and television programmes with live, channel-style viewing. Traditional free ad-supported streaming television services are generally supported by advertising, while the guide says Hoopla and Kanopy are ad-free for users with access to a participating library card.
Tubi offers films, television programmes, live channels and specialised collections, while Pluto TV places greater emphasis on live channels alongside its on-demand library. Engadget says Tubi reports advertising of about four to six minutes an hour.
Hoopla and Kanopy draw on library access, with catalogues that include films, television programmes and documentaries. YouTube also provides an official free catalogue of ad-supported films and television shows, alongside public-domain films and content from some studio channels.
Amazon’s free catalogue is now housed within Prime Video after the standalone Freevee app was retired in 2025, according to the guide. Sling Freestream offers free on-demand content and live channels, while optional account features include a recording function.
Availability, catalogues, advertising loads and app support can vary by country, device and licensing arrangements. Engadget also notes that free services generally do not provide the newest blockbusters or major live sports.
