Apple’s iPhone Handoff lets two iPhones share one mobile number
The iOS 27 feature supports calls, messages, payment cards and selected apps, but confirmed carrier availability remains limited.
Apple’s iOS 27 introduces iPhone Handoff, a feature that allows two iPhones to share one mobile number and selected services. Users can make and receive calls and messages on either device, while payment cards and supported apps can work across both phones.
Engadget reports that Handoff can be configured on two iPhones running iOS 27 or later. Both devices must use the same Apple Account and Wi-Fi network. One iPhone remains the primary device and holds the main eSIM, while the other acts as the secondary phone.
Carrier support is required, and confirmed availability is currently limited to T-Mobile in the US and Telekom in Germany. T-Mobile is reportedly charging an additional US$5 a month. More carriers are expected to support the feature, but no timetable or additional providers were identified.
Apple says most iCloud, FaceTime, iMessage and supported app functions work across the paired devices. The feature could appeal to people moving between old and new phones, travelling with a less valuable handset, or separating work and personal use.
Handoff does not switch a paired Apple Watch between iPhones, and some Apple Wallet items, including IDs and passes, reportedly do not work across both devices. Replacing a paired iPhone requires transferring its eSIM, while fully disabling Handoff may require contacting the carrier.
