Settlers block Jalud family’s return as homes burn
The al-Tubasi family’s return under military escort was halted after settlers attacked in Jalud. Police said three people were arrested on suspicion of involvement.
More than 100 Israeli settlers attacked the West Bank village of Jalud on Monday night as the al-Tubasi family tried to return to homes they had left this summer. The family was accompanied by Israeli forces, but the return was not completed.
The family said settlers threw stones and damaged a military van as they were being evacuated. Mahmoud al-Tubasi told the BBC that settlers set fire to the family’s car and two homes. The Israeli military said settlers blocked roads, set tyres alight and threw stones at security forces.
The military said three police officers were lightly injured and a security forces vehicle was damaged. Israeli police said three people were arrested on suspicion of involvement; the report gave no further information about charges or outcomes.
The family had left after weeks of harassment and attacks near an unauthorised outpost. Earlier this month, Israel’s High Court ordered that the family be allowed to return safely by 20 September, criticising authorities’ failure to address settler violence.
Jalud’s local council head said clashes spread to a nearby village, where a Palestinian woman was assaulted and her house set ablaze. The report did not independently confirm that account.
