Sesko in contention for first Manchester United start of season
The striker has trained fully for more than three weeks and scored as a substitute in Manchester United’s draw with Everton.
Benjamin Sesko is reportedly in contention to make his first start of the season when Manchester United host Sabah in their Champions League opener.
The forward has been used as a substitute in each of United’s first three competitive matches after recovering from a shin injury. He returned to unrestricted training more than three weeks ago.
Sesko strengthened his case in Sunday’s 2–2 draw with Everton, replacing Matheus Cunha and heading in Luke Shaw’s cross. United have also used Bryan Mbeumo and Cunha in central or false-nine roles.
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick said Sesko was “getting closer and closer” to full readiness and had trained without restrictions for more than three weeks. Carrick did not confirm a start, but said the striker would be involved in every match.
The decision also comes ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby, with Carrick managing the workloads of his attacking players. Sesko joined United from RB Leipzig for a reported £74 million and scored seven goals in 13 matches under Carrick before his injury.
Yahoo Sports reported that Sesko hopes to start against Sabah, while Slovenian broadcaster 24ur Sport identified the fixture as an opportunity for the forward to regain his place in the team.
