Sennheiser Momentum 5 earbuds arrive with user-replaceable batteries
The new flagship model aligns with upcoming European sustainability regulations, offering a repairable alternative to glued-together competitors.
Sennheiser has announced the Momentum True Wireless 5, a flagship update to its wireless earbud line that places a distinct emphasis on sustainability and repairability. The primary differentiator for the new model is the inclusion of user-replaceable batteries in both the earbuds and the charging case. This design allows consumers to swap out components using a compact screwdriver, eliminating the need for professional service or the disassembly of glued parts.
The move reflects a broader industry shift driven by European sustainability regulations scheduled to take effect in early 2027. While brands such as Fender and Glorious have introduced over-ear headphones with swappable batteries, adoption in the compact earbud sector has remained limited due to the engineering challenges of maintaining a small form factor. Sennheiser’s approach distinguishes the Momentum 5 from competitors like Bang & Olufsen, whose Beoplay Eleven requires users to send the device to a professional technician for battery replacement.
In terms of performance, the Momentum True Wireless 5 offers a significant increase in battery life compared to its predecessor. The new model provides up to 12 hours of playback per charge, extending to 40 hours when paired with the Qi-compatible charging case. This is a notable improvement over the Momentum 4, which launched in early 2024 with a maximum of 7.5 hours per charge and 30 hours total. The charging case has also been redesigned to be slimmer than the previous generation.
Audio capabilities have been enhanced with the introduction of support for Dolby Atmos and spatial audio, featuring interactive head tracking. Sennheiser has also revised the adaptive active noise cancellation system, which works alongside a redesigned ear tip to improve comfort and stability. Connectivity is upgraded with support for Bluetooth 6.0 and a "robust mode" designed to maintain stable connections in high-interference environments.
The Momentum True Wireless 5 is priced at $299.95, matching the launch price of the Momentum 4. The device will be available from 3 September in five metallic colour options: lavender, copper, denim, graphite, and cream. The launch positions the product alongside other repairable options such as the Fairphone Fairbuds, which also allow users to replace the earbud batteries themselves.
As with previous iterations, the long-term durability of the battery replacement process has not yet been verified by independent testing. However, the inclusion of user-serviceable components marks a significant step in the company’s product strategy, aligning with regulatory trends and consumer demand for longer-lasting electronic devices.
