SEC launches probe into AI hedge fund Situational Awareness
Regulators are scrutinising the fund led by Leopold Aschenbrenner after a late-July market downturn wiped out billions in value.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has begun investigating Situational Awareness, an artificial intelligence-focused hedge fund that recently suffered a significant decline in value. The probe follows a sharp downturn in AI stocks at the end of July, which erased billions of dollars from the firm’s portfolio.
According to reporting by The New York Times, the regulator has issued subpoenas to banks that supervised the fund’s trading activities and provided funding. Authorities have reportedly warned these financial institutions to preserve any information related to the hedge fund.
Situational Awareness is led by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former employee of OpenAI who is in his twenties. The firm previously experienced rapid growth, becoming a notable focus for Wall Street investors before the recent market correction.
The fund had heavily invested in the AI sector, relying on the industry's projected growth trajectory. While the firm has not been formally accused of wrongdoing, the SEC’s action marks a formal step in the regulatory review process.
In a statement to The New York Times, Situational Awareness noted that scrutiny of high-profile funds is to be expected. The company said it would "cooperate to the fullest extent with any regulatory request," although it did not respond directly to a comment request from TechCrunch.
The investigation highlights the risks associated with concentrated bets on emerging technology sectors. As the SEC continues its review, the case may serve as a cautionary example for investors and institutions navigating the volatile landscape of AI-driven markets.
