Scottie Scheffler has established a commanding presence at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, shooting a nine-under 61 to tie the course record at TPC Southwind. The performance, achieved in 100-degree heat, sees the world number one take a three-stroke lead into the weekend with a tournament total of 11-under 129.

Scheffler began his round with birdies on the first five holes, describing the start as a "dream" and noting it was among the best early rounds he has recorded on tour. The round included 11 birdies and two bogeys, reinforcing his dominance in the opening event of the PGA Tour’s FedExCup Playoffs.

The stakes at this tournament extend beyond the prize money. A victory awards 750 points, a value equivalent to a major championship or The Players Championship. Scheffler entered the week with a 794-point lead over Matt Fitzpatrick in the FedExCup standings, a margin that significantly impacts his pathway to the season’s conclusion.

Viktor Hovland and Sungjae Im share second place at 8-under par. Hovland shot a 64, while Im carded a second consecutive 66. Hovland highlighted the importance of accuracy on the difficult layout, noting that hitting fairways was crucial to maintaining his position.
