Scheffler extends FedEx Cup dominance with St Jude Championship victory
American golfer finishes at 17-under par, ending a period of close calls and widening his playoff lead ahead of the BMW Championship.
World number one Scottie Scheffler has extended his lead in the FedEx Cup playoffs after securing a dominant victory at the St Jude Championship. The American golfer won the opening event of the three-tournament series at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, by a margin of eight strokes.
Scheffler finished the tournament at 17-under par for a total score of 263, claiming his 21st PGA Tour title and a prize of $3.6 million. South Korean golfer Si Woo Kim finished second, eight strokes behind the winner, after shooting a final-round 68.
The victory marks Scheffler’s first win since January, ending a period characterised by close finishes. In his final round, Scheffler shot a 4-under-par 66, expanding his lead from two strokes to five by midway through the day. He added further birdies on the 11th, 13th, and 16th holes to secure the result.
The eight-stroke margin represents the largest winning gap in the history of TPC Southwind and the second-largest in the tournament’s past 30 years. Scheffler credited his success to sharp iron play and putting, noting that he was able to compensate for missing fairways.
The next stage of the FedEx Cup playoffs is the BMW Championship, scheduled for next week in St Louis, Missouri. Scheffler won that event last year and will look to maintain his momentum as the series progresses.
