Sangakkara urges Royals to maintain standards amid batting struggles
Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara has defended young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ahead of the IPL clash with Delhi Capitals, while highlighting the team’s need for batting consistency to secure a playoff spot.

Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara has publicly endorsed young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ahead of the team’s Indian Premier League fixture against the Delhi Capitals. Speaking to reporters prior to the match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Sangakkara emphasised the player’s game intelligence and ability to integrate with the squad’s senior members, despite acknowledging the batter’s inconsistent performance record.
Sangakkara described Sooryavanshi as a supremely talented and smart young player who reads the game well. The coach noted that the youngster has already settled into the Rajasthan Royals setup and has held his own among experienced teammates. He advised the batter to enjoy every moment on the field and accept that fluctuations in performance are an inherent part of the sport.
The Royals currently occupy fifth place on the IPL points table, having accumulated 12 points from six wins in 11 matches. To improve their chances of reaching the playoffs, the team requires victories in at least two of their remaining matches. Sangakkara stressed that the squad must maintain consistent standards and focus on the present rather than looking too far ahead to the postseason implications.
Addressing the team’s overall form, the coach observed that while the bowling unit is performing well, the batting line-up requires greater consistency. He described this imbalance as a common occurrence in T20 cricket, urging the players to keep believing in their skillsets to defeat any opposition. Sangakkara added that conversations with players are ongoing to ensure their focus remains on winning every game rather than anticipating future outcomes.
The upcoming clash against the Delhi Capitals represents a critical juncture for Rajasthan Royals as they navigate the final phase of the league stage. With the playoff race tightening, the team’s ability to stabilise its batting order and maintain discipline will be pivotal in determining their trajectory for the remainder of the tournament.
