Samsung’s My FanCam lets users reframe group videos to track a single subject after recording
The new Galaxy AI tool, available on the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Z Fold8 Ultra, offers post-production flexibility for unpredictable scenes by allowing users to select a subject and aspect ratio within the Gallery editing suite.
Samsung has introduced My FanCam, a new Galaxy AI feature designed to allow users to reframe wide-shot videos to track a specific subject after recording. The tool is currently available on the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra running One UI 9, enabling users to select a person from a group video and choose an aspect ratio for a tighter tracking shot.
Unlike Samsung’s existing Auto framing feature, which adjusts composition in real-time while recording, My FanCam operates within the Gallery editing tools. This distinction provides greater flexibility for unpredictable scenes, such as sports games or group performances, where subjects may move erratically. Users can capture the wider scene first and decide who to focus on during the editing process.
To use the feature, users open the Gallery app, select the video, and tap the Galaxy AI icon to choose My FanCam. The system identifies people in the video, allowing the user to select the subject they wish to follow. Users then choose an aspect ratio for the new clip, with vertical crops suitable for portrait-oriented platforms and wider frames preserving more of the original scene.
However, the feature has limitations. My FanCam can only reframe footage that was originally captured; it cannot recover parts of a scene that were never recorded. Consequently, users are advised to keep the subject comfortably within the wider shot to provide the AI with sufficient room to reposition the crop. If the subject moves outside the original frame, the feature cannot track them.
Samsung notes that the feature may not function if the AI cannot identify a subject to track, and it does not guarantee tracking accuracy. The tool is designed to move a smaller frame around inside the video already recorded, meaning a very tight initial shot leaves less surrounding image available for the AI to use.
While One UI 9 has been rolled out to the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Flip8, with more devices expected to follow, the availability of My FanCam is less straightforward. Samsung states that individual AI features can vary by device, language, and region, meaning that even if a phone receives the One UI 9 update, My FanCam may not be included.
