Samsung targets wider screens for 2027 foldable lineup amid video viewing demands

Samsung is reportedly developing up to five new foldable devices for release in 2027, with a specific focus on addressing screen aspect ratio limitations that have drawn criticism for the current Galaxy Z Fold 8. According to a report by South Korean outlet ETNews, the South Korean technology giant is exploring a wider screen format optimised for video consumption.

The current Galaxy Z Fold 8 features a 4:3 aspect ratio on its main display, a design choice that results in significant letterboxing for most video content despite the device’s near-universal acclaim. While the 10:16 cover screen performs better, it is not considered flawless. The proposed new model aims to resolve this by adopting an aspect ratio closer to 16:9 or 16:10, aligning more closely with standard video content formats.

Beyond the new wide-screen device, the anticipated 2027 lineup is rumoured to include updates to the existing Z Fold 8, the Z Fold 8 Ultra, and the Z Flip 8. The report also indicates a refreshed Galaxy Z TriFold, a device previously discontinued due to its high launch price of $2,900. Industry analysts have noted that pricing pressures were exacerbated by an AI-induced RAM shortage in previous market conditions.

These claims regarding Samsung’s product roadmap are based on unverified reports and should be treated as preliminary until official confirmation. Samsung Unpacked 2027 is expected to be held in July, which is when the company is likely to provide concrete details on the composition of the five-device lineup and the specific technical specifications of the new wide-screen model.
