Ryan Coleman-Williams’ strong start tempered by two Alabama drops

Alabama wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams produced a mixed opening to the season, combining four catches for 100 yards before half-time with two costly drops in the Crimson Tide’s opener against East Carolina.
Fox Sports reported that Coleman-Williams dropped a seam pass in the opening quarter after creating separation from the defence. Later in the half, a fade-stop pass from sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell also went through his hands in the end zone.
The errors drew attention because of the expectations surrounding Coleman-Williams, who was previously known as Ryan Williams. Fox Sports noted that the drops recalled concerns from last season and prompted speculation about whether he was dealing with “the yips”, although the source provides no evidence of a clinical or persistent condition.
His production before the break also underlined the playmaking ability Alabama is counting on. Coleman-Williams recorded 48 catches, 865 receiving yards and 10 total touchdowns as a true freshman in 2024, earning first-team All-SEC, second-team All-American and freshman All-American honours.
Alabama is now relying on Coleman-Williams to develop further alongside Russell, who replaced Ty Simpson after Simpson entered the NFL. The opener offered evidence of both the receiver’s influence and the consistency issues that remain a focus.
