Rutgers’ Greg Schiano faces scrutiny after poor 2026 start
Heavy defeats have raised questions over Greg Schiano’s future, while Rutgers could face a reported $17.3 million buyout if it ends his contract.
Greg Schiano’s position at Rutgers has come under scrutiny after a difficult start to the 2026 college football season, including a heavy home defeat by UMass and a slow start against Boston College.
UMass had not beaten a Power Four opponent since joining the FBS in 2012. The result intensified concerns around a Rutgers side that has struggled to build momentum during Schiano’s second stint as head coach.
Schiano returned to Rutgers in 2020, following an earlier tenure that made him the programme’s most accomplished coach since the 1970s, according to CBS Sports. He has not won more than seven games in a season since returning.
A 2023 contract extension runs through the 2030 season. CBS Sports reports that Schiano is scheduled to earn $6.75 million in 2026, with three years and $22.5 million remaining on his deal.
The reported buyout is $17,296,875, equivalent to 76.875 per cent of the remaining contract. The agreement includes a mitigation clause under which future football coaching income would offset the payment, although Schiano is not required to seek another job.
