Russian strikes hit Kyiv science academy and cities across Ukraine
Ukrainian officials reported at least nine people killed and more than 80 wounded nationwide as attacks continued in Kyiv and other cities.
A drone struck the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in central Kyiv on Monday, killing at least two people and setting part of the historic building on fire, according to emergency officials cited by Al Jazeera. A body was recovered from the rubble later that evening.
Further explosions were heard in Kyiv early Tuesday. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said missile debris fell in one building’s courtyard and another building caught fire elsewhere in the city. Ukrainian officials also reported strikes on a pharmaceutical company and petrol stations.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said attacks across Ukraine had killed at least nine people and wounded more than 80. In Dnipro, officials reported three people killed and 19 wounded in an attack on a business centre; an attack in Zaporizhzhia wounded 32, emergency services said.
Zelenskyy said 90 of 120 drones launched at Ukraine on Monday were jet-propelled, and that Ukraine intercepted 57 per cent of that type. He said interceptor drones were being tested, with further development needed to improve their effectiveness and scale.
Ukraine said it had struck Russian oil facilities in the Krasnodar region and two defence plants. Both sides deny deliberately targeting civilians.
