Russian ballistic missile strikes kill 12 in Kyiv
Ukrainian authorities confirmed that overnight ballistic missile attacks have resulted in 12 deaths and severed power to parts of the capital, marking a significant escalation in the conflict.

Russian ballistic missiles struck Kyiv in the early hours of Thursday, killing 12 people and injuring more than 30, Ukrainian authorities reported. The attacks caused extensive damage to buildings and severed the power supply to sections of the Ukrainian capital.
The incident represents a sharp increase in casualties compared to the previous day, when a similar strike shortly after midnight killed at least three people and wounded 20 in the Sviatoshynskyi, Solomianskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts. The latest barrage has raised concerns regarding the sustainability of critical infrastructure in the face of sustained bombardment.
Russian authorities have previously claimed that such strikes target drone component facilities, military depots and logistics hubs. However, the impact on residential areas and civilian utility networks in Kyiv underscores the broader strategic implications of the ongoing conflict.
The escalation has prompted a response from neighbouring NATO states, with Poland and Romania activating air defences in reaction to recent missile activity in the region. This development highlights the expanding security perimeter and the complex diplomatic dynamics surrounding the war.
France 24 International reported the casualty figures and the extent of the infrastructure damage, noting that the power outages have affected multiple parts of the city. The precise number of injured remains a minimum figure, with emergency services continuing to assess the full scale of the impact.
The repeated targeting of Kyiv’s infrastructure poses significant challenges for local governance and emergency response capabilities. As the conflict enters its fifth year, the frequency and lethality of these strikes indicate a continued pressure on Ukrainian defensive systems.
