Russian and Ukrainian strikes cause casualties in Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv and Voronezh
Local officials report significant damage and power outages in southeastern Ukraine, while a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia’s Voronezh region results in fatalities and evacuations at retail facilities.
Overnight attacks by Russian forces have killed six people and wounded 19 in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, according to local officials. Ivan Fedorov, head of the military administration in the southeastern region, described the assault as “massive,” noting the use of long-range missiles and aerial bombs. The strikes caused significant damage to infrastructure, including power outages, and resulted in burning buildings and vehicles, images of which were shared on social media.
In the capital, Kyiv, a ballistic missile strike hit a children’s hospital in the Shevchenkivskyi district. Ukraine’s state emergency service confirmed the attack wounded one person and ignited a fire at a nearby warehouse. Additionally, a Russian drone attack in the southern city of Mykolaiv injured a 75-year-old woman, according to the head of the regional military administration.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence stated that its overnight operations targeted defence industry facilities and transport and logistics centres in Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia. The attacks occur as Russia has stepped up its use of ballistic missiles against Ukrainian cities in recent weeks, a campaign aimed at overwhelming air defences. Ukraine currently faces a shortage of Patriot interceptors, complicating its ability to counter the intensified aerial bombardment.
In a reciprocal escalation, a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia’s Voronezh region killed one person and injured two. Regional governor Alexandr Gusev reported that falling debris triggered fires at warehouse facilities. While Gusev did not specify the exact nature of the damaged property, Russian online retailer Wildberries confirmed the evacuation of its logistics facilities in the region following the incident.
Governor Gusev noted that Russian air defence units destroyed 15 drones over Voronezh and five districts of the region. Wildberries has been identified as a frequent target of Ukrainian attacks deep inside Russian territory. The cross-border strikes highlight the widening scope of the conflict as Kyiv escalates operations within Russian borders in response to the sustained bombardment of Ukrainian urban centres.
