Root acknowledges record chase as he closes in on Tendulkar’s Test tally
Joe Root is 1,978 runs behind Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record, but insists his priority remains technical refinement over chasing numbers.

England batsman Joe Root has conceded that the conversation surrounding his pursuit of Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time Test run record can no longer be ignored. Speaking to The Athletic, the former captain acknowledged that the question of whether he will surpass the Indian legend’s tally has become a persistent fixture in discussions about his career.
Root currently sits second on the all-time list with 13,943 runs, placing him 1,978 runs behind Tendulkar’s record of 15,921. The gap, while significant, has narrowed considerably due to Root’s consistency in the longest format, particularly since 2020, making him the strongest active contender to challenge the historic mark.
Despite nearing one of cricket’s most iconic milestones, Root emphasised that his primary objective remains technical evolution rather than statistical accumulation. He stated that his focus is on ensuring he feels "compact and technically sound" so that he can play instinctively and tactically during matches, without being distracted by the mechanics of his technique.
Root expressed deep admiration for Tendulkar’s longevity and achievements, noting that the Indian icon made his Test debut before Root was born and played in Root’s own debut. He highlighted Tendulkar’s 49 ODI hundreds as part of a remarkable career, adding that merely being mentioned in the same breath as the legend is, in itself, a sufficient honour.
The former England captain reiterated that he is always looking to add new dimensions to his batting. By prioritising tactical awareness over technical worries, Root aims to maintain the form that has propelled him to second place in the history books, even as the shadow of Tendulkar’s 24-year career looms large.
