Rooney rejects retrospective United title if City are sanctioned
The former United captain says his side did not earn the 2011–12 crown, while arguing players should not bear responsibility for conduct they did not know about.
Wayne Rooney says Manchester United should not receive a Premier League title retrospectively if Manchester City are stripped of titles over alleged financial-rule breaches.
Speaking on the Stick to United podcast, Rooney said United had not done enough to win the 2011–12 league, when they finished second to City. He said he would not feel comfortable accepting a medal for finishing runner-up.
Rooney also said players should not be held responsible for actions by club officials if they were unaware of them. He said he would be devastated if a title were taken away from him in similar circumstances.
He opposes stripping City of titles, but said he believes the club should be relegated. Those are Rooney’s views; no sanctions have been announced.
The Premier League case concerns alleged breaches from 2009–10 to 2017–18 and alleged failures to co-operate with investigations from December 2018 to February 2023. City plans to appeal.
