Scotland captain becomes Roberto De Zerbi’s first signing as Spurs begin summer rebuild

Andy Robertson has joined Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract with Liverpool. The 32-year-old Scotland captain spent nine years at Anfield, becoming the first signing for manager Roberto De Zerbi ahead of an expected summer rebuild at the club.

Robertson’s departure marks the end of a highly decorated tenure at Liverpool, where he made 378 appearances. During his time at the club, he won two Premier League titles and the Champions League, establishing himself as one of the world’s premier left-backs after his £8m move from Hull City in 2017.

The move follows a period where Robertson fell behind Milos Kerkez in the squad hierarchy under former Liverpool manager Arne Slot. He was limited to just 11 Premier League starts last season, prompting a previous attempt to transfer him to Tottenham in January. That earlier deal collapsed after Liverpool failed to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma to provide cover, leading the Reds to pull the plug on the transaction.

Roberto De Zerbi, who is overseeing the transition at Tottenham, expressed his long-standing admiration for the defender. He stated that Robertson brings outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership, and mentality to the team. De Zerbi described the Scotland captain as a proven winner at the highest level who can have a significant impact both on and off the pitch.

Robertson currently serves as captain of the Scotland national team, leading his nation into their first World Cup since 1998 this summer. His arrival at Tottenham concludes a significant chapter in English football, closing the door on a stint defined by major silverware and consistent high-level performance.
