Roberts Defends Diaz Amidst Bullpen Struggles Following Brewers Defeat

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed significant frustration following a 5-4 defeat to the Milwaukee Brewers, firmly defending closer Edwin Diaz despite Diaz blowing his third save in a week. The loss, which occurred at Dodger Stadium, saw the Dodgers surrender a 4-2 lead in the ninth inning after Diaz allowed four consecutive singles.

Diaz entered the top of the ninth with a strikeout but exited after just two outs with runners in scoring position. The collapse was compounded when relief pitcher Alex Vesia surrendered a weak grounder that resulted in a hit and the go-ahead run. Diaz, who recently returned from shoulder surgery, has appeared shaky in recent outings and admitted to struggling with his performance.

When pressed by the media regarding the future of the closer role, Roberts stated he had no better alternative option available. He urged the team to stabilise other relievers before considering any changes to the bullpen hierarchy. Roberts specifically told reporters, "Give me another option," noting that other relievers are not currently "throwing the baseball great."

Diaz, typically confident, acknowledged his difficulties after the game. He stated that he would do whatever the team decides is best for the club, indicating openness to role changes if deemed necessary for the team's success. However, no official decision has been made to alter his status.

Roberts emphasised that he cannot simply move Diaz to a lower-leverage role without having other viable options. He indicated that the conversation about changing the closer role is not valid until other relievers improve their performance. The manager’s stance reflects a desire to maintain stability in the bullpen despite the recent setbacks.
