Cardiff Devils secure Harewood for full-time Elite League role
Head coach Paul Thompson cites developmental readiness and improved defensive habits as key factors in Bayley Harewood’s promotion to the professional roster.
Cardiff Devils have confirmed the signing of Bayley Harewood to his first full-time professional contract, concluding a five-year period where the 23-year-old balanced commitments between the Elite League side and National Ice Hockey League (NIHL) clubs. Harewood will remain with the Devils for their upcoming 40th season, marking a significant shift from his previous status as a two-way player.
The announcement comes as the club prepares for its pre-season campaign, which begins this weekend with exhibition matches against Denmark’s Odense Bulldogs. With the Elite League season set to commence in September, the signing solidifies the roster ahead of the opening competitive fixtures.
Harewood’s path to a full-time deal involved extensive development time at lower-tier clubs, including Bees HC, Telford Tigers, and most recently, the Bristol Pitbulls. During the 2025–2026 season, he recorded 18 goals and 34 assists across 38 league and cup games for Bristol, providing the statistical foundation for his promotion.

Thompson noted that Harewood required time to refine his defensive game and professional habits, citing defensive misjudgements during a trial game against Sheffield as evidence of the time spent away from the Elite League level.
Despite these earlier concerns, Thompson highlighted a vast improvement in Harewood’s defensive awareness and offensive skills. The coach emphasised that the player’s physical stature and improved decision-making have now aligned with the demands of the higher level, allowing him to contribute effectively to the squad.
Harewood expressed enthusiasm for the new role, acknowledging the value of his time in the NIHL. He stated that the lower league provided the necessary ice time and minutes to progress, noting that the level is growing and deserves greater respect. The contract allows him to focus entirely on performance at the Elite League standard without the distraction of split commitments.
The signing represents a strategic move for the Devils as they finalise their squad for the 40th season. By integrating a player who has proven his offensive capabilities and addressed defensive vulnerabilities, the club aims to strengthen its roster depth ahead of the September start.
