Reddit trials AI-voiced video conversion of text posts
CEO Steve Huffman and spokesperson Rosa Kim outline plans to let users listen to content in the background, following similar practices by third-party content scrapers.

Reddit is testing a feature that converts text-based posts and comments into videos narrated by artificial intelligence voices. The initiative, described by the company as an early, limited experiment, aims to modernise the platform’s video experience and enable users to consume content while listening in the background.
The feature generates videos where an AI voice reads the text of the main post and selected comments, highlighting the text as it is spoken. A disclaimer beneath the video identifies the output as a “Real conversation voiced by AI.” The experiment is currently live on the web and is scheduled to expand to iOS and Android platforms starting Tuesday.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman referenced the project during an earnings call, noting the company is exploring an “emerging content type” where AI voices read Reddit content. Huffman observed that a spoken or listened-to version of Reddit posts can be highly engaging, pointing to the existence of entire YouTube channels dedicated to this format by third-party content scrapers.
Spokesperson Rosa Kim stated that the rollout will begin with “select existing posts” before expanding to more content over time. The move aligns with a shareholder letter in which Reddit stated it is “reimagining how users and communities connect, share, and consume content through a modernized video experience on Reddit.”
This trial follows the introduction of video replies earlier this year. While the technology mimics human conversation, questions remain regarding potential issues such as mispronunciations or the AI citing incorrect comments, as the company seeks to understand user engagement and authenticity.
