The transaction, described as a rare one-for-one deal without additional considerations, positions Mead to make his debut for the new club on Monday night against the Oakland Athletics in Sacramento.
Mead, who spent the current season with the Nationals, is expected to start at second base in his first appearance for Boston. Although he primarily played third base in Washington, the Red Sox have solidified their corner infield positions with Caleb Durbin at third and All-Star Willson Contreras at first. Mead has made only 35 career starts at second base, with just one this year, but the move addresses Boston’s search for a right-handed bat.
The trade marks a significant pivot for the Red Sox front office, which was viewed as a potential seller at the trade deadline just weeks ago. A 15-game winning streak has shifted Boston’s standing, placing them in the second American League wild card spot. They are now -235 favourites to make the postseason, a stark contrast to their previous outlook.
Mead’s arrival comes with high expectations for his offensive production. In 87 games with Washington, he recorded a slash line of .254/.352/.500, including 17 doubles, 17 home runs, and 48 runs batted in. He does not hit free agency until 2031. Conversely, Early, who is currently on the injured list, posted a 3.44 ERA and a 0.7 WAR with the Red Sox before the trade. He is not eligible for free agency until 2032.
The Red Sox face the Oakland Athletics, who are dealing with significant roster losses. All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers is expected to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn meniscus in his right knee. Langeliers had been on pace for a historic season, slashing .263/.332/.497 with 23 home runs. Boston will face Athletics starter Jack Perkins, who holds a 6.75 ERA and has struggled recently, allowing five home runs in his past three starts.
