Real Madrid secure Diomande as PSG withdraw from transfer battle

Real Madrid have reached an agreement on personal terms with RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, confirming the 19-year-old’s move to the Spanish capital. The deal, valued at more than £100 million, follows the withdrawal of interest from Paris St-Germain, who had previously submitted a final bid of £102.5 million that was rejected by Leipzig.

The acquisition marks a strategic shift for Real Madrid’s recruitment department, with sources indicating that key negotiators Jose Angel and Juni Calafat have monitored the player for approximately five years. This long-term assessment was conducted independently of Diomande’s recent performances for Ivory Coast at the World Cup, where he featured in all four of his country’s matches.

Diomande’s contract structure is modelled on that of England midfielder Jude Bellingham, incorporating performance-based incentives designed to improve year-on-year. This framework aligns with Real Madrid’s approach to integrating young talent into the first team, offering financial progression tied to on-pitch contributions rather than a static salary package.

The transfer saga had seen Liverpool submit an initial bid of £69 million in June, which was also turned down by Leipzig. Following that rejection, Liverpool moved on to other targets, leaving PSG to pursue the winger. However, PSG opted against entering a prolonged bidding war with Real Madrid, ultimately stepping away from the negotiations.

Leipzig had attempted to retain Diomande in Germany but acknowledged the extraordinary level of interest from Europe’s elite clubs. The potential for a record sale price made it difficult for the German side to resist the offer. Diomande, who was named Bundesliga’s young player of the season for 2025-26 with 12 goals and eight assists, joined Leipzig from Leganes last summer after a move from an American academy.
