Rays clinch playoff place with Caminero’s ninth-inning homer
Tampa Bay defeated Houston 3–1 after Junior Caminero’s walk-off, two-run home run secured the American League’s first playoff berth of the season.
The Tampa Bay Rays secured a place in the 2026 MLB playoffs with a 3–1 win over the Houston Astros at Tropicana Field on Friday.
The game was tied 1–1 entering the ninth inning before Jonathan Aranda doubled against Houston reliever Bryan Abreu. The Astros chose to pitch to Junior Caminero, who hit a first-pitch fastball for a walk-off, two-run home run.
The result made Tampa Bay the first American League team to clinch a place in this year’s playoff field. The Rays remain in contention for the AL East title, so their final seeding is yet to be determined.
Houston entered the game with a three-game lead in the AL West but finished with a 75–73 record. The Astros collected nine hits but went 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded six baserunners.
Tampa Bay starter Drew Rasmussen worked seven innings and allowed one run. Houston’s opener strategy, involving Miguel Ullola and Bryan King before bulk reliever Ethan Pecko, restricted the Rays to two hits through eight innings, but could not prevent the decisive ninth-inning rally, according to Yahoo Sports’ account of the game.
