Ravens waive Pavia eight weeks after signing

The Baltimore Ravens have waived quarterback Diego Pavia, a move executed just one day before the start of rookie training camp. The decision concludes an 83-day period that began when Pavia signed as an undrafted free agent from Vanderbilt on May 1. The release comes as the team finalises its roster ahead of the 2026 season, with the club expected to carry only two quarterbacks on its 53-man roster.

Pavia had been competing for the third quarterback spot behind two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson and former Pro Bowler Tyler Huntley. His competition for that position also included 2022 seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson and 2026 undrafted free agent Joe Fagnano. With the Ravens likely to divide preseason game reps between Jackson and Huntley, the third quarterback is expected to spend the majority of the season on the practice squad.

During his time at Vanderbilt, Pavia led the Commodores to their first 10-win season in school history. He set single-season records for wins, passing yards (3,539), and passing touchdowns (29). He also ranked second in college football in total yards per game and tied for third in total touchdowns. Despite these statistical achievements, Pavia faces physical stature challenges for the NFL, standing at 5-foot-10 and 203 pounds.

The roster move also addresses potential distractions, as Pavia previously posted an expletive-filled image regarding Heisman voters before issuing an apology. With the Jets described as having one of the worst quarterback rooms in the NFL, and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers holding his CFL negotiating rights, Pavia has several potential next steps. These include a stint in the UFL in spring 2027 or a transition into podcasting and social media, where he already has 112,000 Instagram followers.
