Paris St-Germain face Arsenal in the Champions League final at Budapest’s Puskas Arena on Saturday, with the French club holding a potential tactical advantage derived from a lighter domestic schedule. Arsenal have completed 63 games this season compared to PSG’s 56, with the Gunners’ starting eleven accumulating approximately 7,000 more league minutes than their French counterparts.

The disparity in workload is stark. Arsenal’s starting 11 amassed 6,726 extra minutes of playing time in league games this season compared to PSG’s opening side. While the Premier League features 20 teams and Ligue 1 18, the cumulative effect of Arsenal’s four-trophy pursuit has resulted in a denser fixture list. PSG secured their Ligue 1 title on 13 May, granting them 13 days of rest before the final, whereas Arsenal had six days of rest after clinching the Premier League title.

PSG manager Luis Enrique utilised extensive rotation, a strategy supported by the club’s deep squad and the relative weakness of domestic opposition. Enrique used 28 players in Ligue 1 fixtures, compared to Mikel Arteta’s 25. Captain Marquinhos started 14 Champions League games but only 11 league games, remaining an unused substitute in seven successive league matches between 13 February and 19 April. Similarly, Ousmane Dembele completed 90 minutes in the league only once in 22 appearances, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia played the full duration just twice in 28 matches.

Arsenal’s key players have been indispensable throughout the campaign. Goalkeeper David Raya played every minute of the season until being rested on the final day against Crystal Palace. Declan Rice, William Saliba, Gabriel, and Martin Zubimendi have all started at least 30 league games. In contrast, only PSG midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery played more league minutes (2,453) than any other player in the Arsenal squad. Six Arsenal players exceeded this total.

The physical toll on PSG has not been entirely absent, with three of their six league defeats coming immediately after Champions League ties. However, the rest period differential remains significant. PSG lost their last league game 2-1 to mid-table Paris FC on 17 May, having been presented with the trophy before kick-off. Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber remains a huge doubt for the final after being injured since mid-March. The match marks a culmination of contrasting seasons: PSG’s 12th Ligue 1 title in 14 years and Arsenal’s first Premier League crown in 22 years.
