PS5 DualSense battery life falls short as stick drift threatens longevity

Sony’s PlayStation 5 DualSense controller may require replacement well before the console, according to an assessment by Engadget. The standard controller typically delivers about six to 12 hours of use per charge, with battery life varying according to the game and the use of features such as haptics, adaptive triggers, the light bar and speaker.
The DualSense’s 1,560mAh lithium-ion battery is drained by those power-intensive features. Games that make heavier use of dynamic trigger resistance and haptic feedback can push battery life towards the lower end of the estimate, making a charging cable or second controller useful for longer sessions.
Sony’s premium DualSense Edge does not improve on that performance. Its smaller 1,050mAh battery supports about five to 10 hours per charge, with the reduced capacity attributed to additional hardware including rear paddles, removable stick modules and trigger-stop mechanisms.
Battery endurance is separate from the controller’s broader service life. Engadget says stick drift, in which analogue sticks register movement without deliberate input, can emerge through wear and tear or exposure to moisture from fingers. Heavy use may bring on the problem sooner, although the available material does not establish a fixed lifespan or quantify the likelihood that a controller will develop it.
Sony’s stated warranty coverage provides repair or replacement for qualifying defects during the first 12 months, subject to applicable terms and individual cases. Cleaning analogue-stick inputs and installing firmware updates are suggested as troubleshooting measures, while repairs after the warranty period may need to be paid for.
The Xbox Series X/S controller offers substantially longer battery endurance: about 30–40 hours with AA batteries, or 25–30 hours with an official rechargeable pack. That comparison concerns battery life rather than overall controller durability.
