Projectile strike wounds two and damages mosque in Saudi Arabia’s Jazan region
Saudi Civil Defence said a projectile attributed to Yemen’s Houthi rebels damaged civilian property in al-Tuwal. The Houthis said they were targeting a Saudi military base.
Two people were wounded after a projectile struck al-Tuwal governorate in Saudi Arabia’s southern Jazan region on Saturday, according to Saudi Civil Defence, which also reported damage to a mosque, several buildings and vehicles.
The agency said emergency procedures were activated and described the reported damage to civilian objects as a violation of international humanitarian law. It later said the danger had passed in Khamis Mushait governorate after a warning to residents.
The Houthis said the intended target was a Saudi military base in Sharurah, in Najran province. That claim, and the precise circumstances of the strike, have not been independently verified in the account reported by Al Jazeera.
The incident follows reported Houthi missile and drone strikes on southern Saudi Arabia in recent days. Saudi Arabia previously said strikes on Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran had wounded 73 people, including women and children.
The attacks come amid a renewed escalation in Yemen’s conflict, which reportedly reignited in July after about four years of relative calm under a United Nations-brokered truce. UN special envoy Hans Grundberg has warned that Yemen is entering “a new and more dangerous phase of war”.
